The main aim of this study is to describe the different modes in which a myth can be
rewritten or reformulated within the thematic universe of a given literary work. Myth is understood
here as a model tale which displays a response to typically human problem or conflict,
as well as an intertext which creates a framework of reference for the author to conceptualize
the myth in his/her the fictional universe so that it better fits his/her personal sensitivity
or the contemporary cultural context. In order to tackle the question of intertextuality, it is necessary to establish the differences between the following concepts: ancestral oral myth,
literarisized myth, literary myth, explicit ant implicit myths, mythical themes in certain genres,
etc. Finally, the analysis of myth rewriting is carried out a mythocritical and comparative
literature perspective
Samuel Beckett’s Murphy and the Bethlem Royal Hospital: historical and autobiographical context
This B. A. Thesis analyses the historical and autobiographical context of Samuel Beckett’s first published novel: Murphy (1938). A direct relationship is established between London’s Bethlem Royal Hospital and the mental health issues Beckett was experiencing at the time he wrote Murphy, and the mental hospital portrayed in the novel and the characters that people it. Beckett’s own testmonies and those of his acquaintances will be used in conjunction with different biographical and historical sources.
Following a methodology inspired by mythocritical theories by Brunel and Siganos, this essay focuses on the rewriting of the myth of the Minotaur and the labyrinth performed by J.M.G. Le ClĂ©zio in his narrative Ariane. Here the labyrinth adopts the form of an impoverished neighborhood in a contemporary city —a perfect backdrop to the tragic story of young Christine, who is chased by a gang of bikers acting by night “like a hoard of wild beasts.” This rewriting works implicitly, through allusion and analogy, by means of a series of images and associations interwoven in the narrator’s discourse. Particular emphasis has been placed in this essay on the concept of hybris, which the Greek related to disproportionate arrogance, to irrational impulse that breaks the limits of harmony.
Direct numerical analysis of dynamic facilitation in glass-forming liquids
We propose a computational strategy to quantify the temperature evolution of
the timescales and lengthscales over which dynamic facilitation affects the
relaxation dynamics of glass-forming liquids at low temperatures, that requires
no assumption about the nature of the dynamics. In two glass models, we find
that dynamic facilitation depends strongly on temperature, leading to a
subdiffusive spreading of relaxation events which we characterize using a
temperature-dependent dynamic exponent. We also establish that this temperature
evolution represents a major contribution to the increase of the structural
relaxation time
Joseph Kessel wrote several testimonies on the Catalonian uprising of 1934. We first
analyse the articles on the journal Le Matin in which he tells about what was happening in
Barcelona. We then comment on Kessels’ reportage Orage sur Barcelone published in Marianne, where he enlarges what he had exposed in Le Matin. We also analyse Une balle perdue
(1935), a novel dealing with the ideological growth of a man named Alejandro. Through this
character, Kessel explains the behaviour of several young men who, facing the defeat of the
«Catalan state», decided to honourably show their insurrection by becoming snipers in order
to end up their lives shooting the Spanish soldiers from the roofs of Barcelona.
